Lights: YULE TRADITIONS AND SYMBOLS

>For centuries, homes and holiday trees were decorated with candles to frighten negative entities and urge the Sun to shine.

Although the candles were beautiful, the practice was dangerous; it meant that people had to keep
a constant watch to make sure nothing caught on fire.

In 1895, an American named Ralph E. Morris finally came up with a solution; he hung some strings of
switchboard lights on his tree, and electric holiday lighting was born.
