Mastering Solitary Pagan Witchcraft 3: Finding Time for Witchcraft as a Solitary Pagan Witch

One of the great advantages of being a solitary Pagan witch is that your practice belongs entirely to you. There is no coven timetable to follow, no priest or priestess expecting you to attend a ritual, and no rule saying that your spiritual practice must take a particular form.   Yet this freedom can sometimes create another problem. We may convince ourselves that we are not practising “properly” unless we are performing elaborate rituals, casting circles, lighting candles and spending hours working spells.   The truth is much simpler: start small.

Witchcraft Doesn’t Have to Take Hours

You do not need an hour-long ritual every day to call yourself a practising witch. Five minutes spent quietly connecting with nature can be meaningful. So can standing beneath the Moon, lighting a candle with intention, drawing a tarot card or simply sitting quietly and becoming aware of the atmosphere around you.   For the solitary witch, these little moments can become the foundation of a deeply personal practice.   Keep a journal beside your bed and write down dreams, thoughts, unusual feelings or experiences. Record the phases of the Moon, changing weather, seasonal observations, spells you might want to try or ideas that suddenly come to you.   You don’t have to write pages. Sometimes a single sentence is enough.

Recognise the Magic You’re Already Doing

Try changing how you think about witchcraft.   Instead of counting only formal spells and rituals, begin recognising all those smaller magical moments.   Perhaps you walk into a room and immediately notice its atmosphere. Maybe you pause beneath an old tree and place your hand against its bark. Perhaps you notice the first signs of autumn, watch the Moon through your window or spend ten seconds grounding yourself before beginning the day.   These things count.   Solitary witchcraft is not a performance. Nobody is watching, marking your work or deciding whether you have done enough.

Bring Magic Into Ordinary Life

Some of the easiest forms of solitary witchcraft can be woven into everyday activities.   Water your plants with intention. Choose jewellery because of its personal or spiritual meaning. Wear colours that represent the energy you want to carry through the day. Stir your morning tea or coffee while concentrating upon something you wish to achieve.   Cooking, gardening, walking, cleaning and bathing can all become mindful magical activities when approached with intention.   A solitary Pagan witch can also develop small personal traditions. You might greet the Moon whenever you see her, keep a seasonal altar, collect fallen leaves, grow herbs or spend a few quiet moments outdoors each morning.   Over time, these small practices become your traditions rather than traditions somebody else has handed to you.

Give Yourself Permission to Stop

Perhaps most importantly, don’t turn witchcraft into another obligation.   There will be days when you don’t feel spiritual or magical. There may even be weeks when life gets in the way.   That’s perfectly fine.   You don’t lose your path because you haven’t performed a ritual recently.   Being a solitary Pagan witch means developing a practice that fits naturally around your life, rather than forcing your life to fit around your witchcraft.   Start small. Pay attention. Experiment. Rest when you need to.   Your practice doesn’t have to impress anybody.   It simply has to belong to you.
