Regenerative Education: Learning to Belong to the Living World

What if education was not simply about learning about the world, but also about learning how to belong within it? This is at the heart of regenerative education. It begins with relationships and recognises that we are connected to ourselves, to other people, and to the natural world around us.

Connection to Self

Understanding ourselves is an important part of learning. By developing self-awareness, looking after our wellbeing, and encouraging personal growth, we become more aware of who we are and how we affect the world around us.

Connection to Others

None of us exists in isolation. Regenerative education encourages empathy, compassion, cooperation, and stronger relationships. It reminds us that our actions affect other people and that our lives are deeply connected.

Connection to Nature

Nature is not something separate from us or something that simply exists “out there.” We are part of it. The air we breathe, the water we drink, the food we eat, and the land beneath our feet all connect us to the wider living world. We do not simply live on Earth; we live within Earth’s natural systems. In that sense, we are nature too. These three relationships—Self, Others, and Nature—cannot really be separated. They are more like strands of the same braid. Strengthening one can strengthen the others. When we understand ourselves better, we can improve the way we relate to other people. When we build stronger relationships with others, we become more aware of our shared responsibilities. When we reconnect with nature, we begin to recognise that human life is part of something much larger. Regenerative education therefore goes beyond simply teaching facts about the environment. It encourages people to experience connection, responsibility, and belonging. The aim is not merely to understand the Web of Life, but to recognise that we are part of that web. When we care for ourselves, each other, and the natural world, we strengthen those connections. And when those connections become stronger, all life has a better chance to thrive. Self. Others. Nature. Not three separate worlds, but one interconnected living system.
