Making a Hop Pillow

How to Make a Hop Pillow: Simple Steps.

Hop pillows have long been used to help with sleep and relaxation. The scent of hops, mixed with gentle herbs and soft fabric, can make bedtime more soothing. Making a hop pillow is a straightforward project, even for beginners.

To get started, gather these materials:

  • About half a yard of muslin fabric for the inner lining.
  • A mix of dried hops, lavender, chamomile, and, if you like, some dried rose petals or lemon balm for extra fragrance.
  • Half a yard of cotton fabric, plain or patterned, for the outer cover.
  • Cotton lace or ribbon if you want to decorate your pillow.
  • Basic sewing tools: scissors, needle and thread, or a sewing machine.

First, cut two rectangles of muslin, each about 14 by 12 inches. Place them together with the right sides facing each other. Sew around three sides, leaving one short side open. Turn the pouch right side out so the seams are inside. Fill it with your herbal mix until it feels comfortably full, but not too tight. Close the open side by hand-stitching it shut, making sure the seam is secure.

Next, make the outer cover. Cut two pieces of cotton fabric, each about 16 by 14 inches, so the inner pillow will fit inside easily. If you want to add lace or ribbon, pin it along the edge of one piece, with the decorative side facing in. Place the two cotton pieces together, right sides facing, and sew around three sides, including the trim if you are using it. Turn the cover right side out and press the seams flat. Fold in the raw edges of the open side.

Slide the muslin pillow into the cotton cover. To finish, sew the last edge closed by hand with small, neat stitches. You can add more decorations, like lace, embroidery, or ribbon bows, if you wish.

Over time, the scent of the pillow may fade. To refresh it, open the hand-stitched seam, take out the muslin pouch, and replace the herbs with a fresh mix. Sew the seam closed again. This way, you can keep your pillow smelling pleasant without making a new one.

For best results, store your hop pillow in a cool, dry place when not in use. Using organic herbs can help keep the scent strong and the pillow safe to use. With a little care, your handmade hop pillow can bring comfort and relaxation for many nights.
