Books on Witchcraft can be enormously useful.
They introduce ideas.
They preserve traditions.
They provide rituals, correspondences, folklore and techniques.
But they should perhaps be treated as maps rather than territories.
A map can show you where other travellers have walked.
It cannot walk the road for you.
The danger comes when the map becomes more important than the landscape.
If somebody becomes convinced that Magick can only happen when a ritual contains exactly the correct candle, herb, moon phase, direction, words and sequence of actions, the ritual can become an exercise in following instructions.
For some people that structure is valuable.
The Solitary Pagan Witch, however, has another possibility.
Learn the structure — and then learn when to leave it behind.
