In Celtic tradition, the Bat is seen as a special animal symbol. It is often connected to the mysteries of the underworld and the unseen parts of life. The Celts believed the Bat acted as a “spiritual navigator,” able to move between different worlds and help guide souls through darkness and uncertainty.
This idea comes from the Bat’s habits. Bats are active at night and can find their way in the dark, using senses other than sight. For the Celts, this showed strong intuition and awareness—the ability to notice things that are hidden from normal view.
The way Bats hang upside down also added to their meaning. To the Celts, this was a symbol for seeing things from a new point of view and for transformation. It also reminded them of birth, since a child is born head first, much like a Bat’s position.
