Juniper Liniment

Juniper is often appreciated for its cleansing and protective qualities. Many traditions value it for its ability to help ease pain and negativity from the mind, body, and spirit. When used with care, juniper may support both physical and energetic healing.

For this preparation, 8 ounces of organic Juniper Berries, known botanically as Juniperus communis, are suggested. Using high-quality, organic berries can help ensure the liniment’s purity and strength. Juniper Berries are commonly linked to purification and are thought to help clear stagnant energy.

The next ingredient is 300 milliliters of Witch Hazel extract, from Hamamelis virginiana. Witch Hazel is a natural astringent and is often included in herbal remedies for its soothing and anti-inflammatory properties. It also serves as an effective carrier for the active compounds in Juniper Berries, helping deliver their benefits to the skin.

An optional essential oil blend may be added to enhance the liniment. This blend can begin with 3 drops of Clove Bud essential oil, known for its warming and soothing effects. Clove Bud, or Syzygium aromaticum, is sometimes used to ease discomfort and support circulation.

Next, 3 drops of Sweet Orange essential oil, from Citrus sinensis, may be included. This oil offers a bright, uplifting aroma and is often used to support emotional well-being and relaxation.

Adding 3 drops of Sweet Basil essential oil, or Ocimum basilicum, is another option. Sweet Basil is valued for its calming and clarifying qualities, and may help soothe both body and mind.

Including 6 drops of Juniper essential oil can further reinforce the cleansing and protective qualities of the liniment, deepening the connection to the main herbal ingredient.

Finally, 6 drops of Rosemary essential oil, from Rosmarinus officinalis, may be added. Rosemary is traditionally used to support circulation and relieve muscle tension, making it a helpful addition to this blend.

To prepare the liniment, the Juniper Berries can be gently ground to release their aromatic oils. The ground berries are then combined with the Witch Hazel extract in a clean glass jar. Sealing the jar and allowing the mixture to infuse for a full lunar cycle, or about 28 days, is a common approach. During this time, shaking the jar daily and, if desired, speaking or singing words of intention to the mixture may enhance its energetic qualities. After the infusion period, the Juniper Berries can be strained from the Witch Hazel using a fine mesh or cheesecloth. At this point, the extract may be bottled as is, or the prepared essential oil blend can be added for extra benefits and fragrance. The strained Juniper Berries may also be wrapped in cheesecloth and placed in a warm bath for a soothing, aromatic experience.

When using the Juniper Liniment, shaking the bottle well before each use helps ensure the ingredients are evenly mixed. A small amount can be poured onto a clean cloth and gently rubbed or wrapped around areas of discomfort, such as sore shoulders or aching knees. The liniment may also be transferred to a spray bottle for easier application to larger areas. Storing the liniment in a cool, dark place is recommended, as this can help it remain effective for several years. Performing a patch test before wider use is a good way to check for skin compatibility.
