Herbal Pot-Pourris: Spicy Lavender Pot-Pourri

To create this blend, it is helpful to gather the following ingredients:

  • 1/2 pint of dried lavender flowers, which offer a calming floral scent and serve as the aromatic base.
  • 1/4 pint of dried cornflowers, adding a subtle earthy note and a vibrant blue color for visual interest.
  • 1/4 pint of whole cloves, contributing a warm, spicy fragrance and helping to preserve the mixture.
  • 1/2 pint of crushed cinnamon sticks, providing a sweet, spicy aroma that complements the other ingredients.
  • 1/2 pint of dried pink rose petals, for a gentle, romantic scent and a touch of color.
  • 2 tablespoons of a lavender and orris root mixture, which acts as a fixative to help the fragrance last longer.

The pot-pourri can be prepared by gently combining all the ingredients in a large mixing bowl. Clean, dry hands or a wooden spoon may be used to ensure the mixture is evenly distributed, while taking care not to bruise the delicate petals. Once mixed, the blend is typically transferred into a large glass jar or a polythene bag. Sealing the container tightly helps preserve the scent. It is recommended to store the mixture in a cool, dark place for two to four weeks, shaking the jar gently every few days to encourage the fragrances to blend and mature. Exposure to direct sunlight or moisture may reduce the scent and color, so these are best avoided.
