Hedgewitch

Personal Empowerment for the Hedgewitch

The Hedgewitch guide is organized into fourteen segments, each called a “night,” as these are typically the times set aside for the rituals. Each day begins in the morning by reading an affirmation and focusing on a specific theme. For instance, the first night centers on the element of wind, which is associated with Spirit.

To begin, find a quiet moment to close your eyes, calm your thoughts, and invite the energy of Spirit into your awareness. Softly repeat the word “wind,” and visualize its presence. When you open your eyes, repeat the day’s affirmation at least three times. You are encouraged to revisit this affirmation throughout your day, as often as you wish.

It can be helpful to keep a small notebook nearby. Use it to jot down anything unusual you notice, or any people, places, or events that seem connected to the day’s theme. These notes will help you prepare for the evening’s ritual. This process continues for each of the fourteen segments.

Each segment also includes a simple task for the day. For example, on the first night, you might choose a signature plant to work with throughout your Hedgewitch experience. You will need a physical representation of this plant for the final segment, which is the dedication ceremony.

Every day, you are invited to let go of something negative, outdated, or no longer useful in your life. This practice creates space for new, positive growth. For instance, on the first day, you might air out your home. The choice of what to release is entirely yours. If you are unable to complete a release on a particular day, you can always return to it in the following days, ideally before the final ceremony.

Each “night” also highlights a group of herbs that correspond to the energy and intention of the ritual. You will be encouraged to create a personal sigil, or symbol, that reflects the day’s focus. This is done during the ritual and is inspired by your observations and experiences throughout the day. Your sigil can be as simple or as detailed as you like.

By the end of the fourteen segments, you will have created fourteen unique symbols, or “keys,” that can be used in your future work. Because these symbols are of your own design, they will hold special meaning for you. You may choose to use them in candle magic, on written petitions, embroidered on clothing, or placed in charm bags. Their significance is personal, and only you will know their true meaning.

Once you have completed all the symbols, you might enjoy experimenting by combining them, much like bind runes, to discover new ways they can support your practice.

Keeping a Hedgewitch journal as you move through these rites can be very helpful. Your journal does not need to be elaborate. It can include your dreams, unusual experiences, the sigils you create, and any thoughts or insights you have. Even brief notes are valuable, as this record is for your personal reflection.

You are welcome to rearrange the first eleven rites to better suit your needs. However, please note that some rites use materials introduced in earlier segments. If you decide to change the order, make sure to plan ahead and adjust as needed. For example, if you experience a rainstorm or thunderstorm early in your journey, you may wish to perform the Rite of Rain or the Rite of Thunder at that time.
