Starting the Day the Hedgewitch Way

Starting Your Day the Hedgewitch Way.

To begin your journey into Hedgewitchcraft, it’s beneficial to establish a mindful morning ritual. Start each day by reading a daily affirmation. Today, focus on the element of wind, often associated with the energy of Spirit in many traditions. Wind symbolizes movement, change, and the invisible forces that connect everything. By attuning yourself to the wind, you invite clarity, inspiration, and spiritual presence into your life.

Find a quiet space where you won’t be disturbed. Sit comfortably, close your eyes, and take several deep breaths to calm your mind. As you breathe, imagine the wind gently moving around you, clearing away any stagnant energy. Feel the presence of Spirit entering your body with each breath. When you feel centered, softly repeat the word “wind,” visualizing its movement—perhaps as a gentle breeze, a powerful gust, or swirling currents. This visualization helps you connect with the element on a deeper level.

Open your eyes and read the affirmation for the day aloud at least three times. For example, you might say, “I welcome the cleansing and inspiring energy of the wind into my life.” Throughout the day, return to this affirmation whenever you need a moment of clarity or renewal. Repeating affirmations can reinforce your intentions and help you remain mindful of your spiritual practice.

Keep a small notebook or a dedicated Hedgewitch journal nearby. Record any unusual events, thoughts, or encounters that seem connected to the wind. This could include a sudden breeze, a conversation about weather, or a place that feels especially airy. Noting these experiences will help you recognize patterns and deepen your understanding of how Spirit communicates with you through the element of wind.

In preparation for the first night’s Rite of Wind, select your signature plant, herb, or flower. This plant will serve as a personal symbol and ally in your practice. Choosing a signature plant is a meaningful step, as it reflects your unique connection to nature and the qualities you wish to cultivate. For instance, lavender is often chosen for its calming properties, while rosemary symbolizes remembrance and protection.

To choose your plant, consider what qualities resonate with you or what you feel drawn to. You may wish to research different plants online, visit a bookstore, or explore your local library for information. If you already have a favorite plant, reflect on why it appeals to you and what it represents in your life. Once you have made your choice, obtain a physical representation of the plant. This could be a living specimen, a dried sample, or even a photograph or drawing if a fresh plant is not available.

If you have a garden, see if your chosen plant is already growing there. If not, visit a local nursery, grocery store, or search online for a suitable specimen. If you know where the plant grows wild, consider taking a respectful walk to collect a small sample. Having a living plant can help you form a stronger connection, but dried or preserved forms are also effective.

The next step is to prepare your environment for spiritual work. Begin by cleansing your home of any unpleasant odors or stagnant air. Open windows to allow fresh air to circulate, symbolizing the movement of wind and the clearing of old energy. Burning scented candles, using air fresheners, or diffusing essential oils such as lavender, lemon verbena, or lemongrass can further enhance the atmosphere. These scents are traditionally associated with purification and clarity.

If you own a vehicle, take time to clean it as well. Remove any accumulated trash or clutter, and if possible, wash the exterior. A clean and orderly environment supports clear thinking and spiritual focus. If you are unable to complete this task immediately, set an intention to do so before the end of your fourteen-day practice.

For those dedicating a week to this rite, consider exploring additional projects or techniques related to spiritual cleansing. This might include making your own herbal blends, crafting incense, or preparing a magickal cabinet of supplies. For example, you could create a cleansing herbal mix using dried lavender, rosemary, and chamomile, or assemble a small conjuring bag filled with your chosen herbs.
