Mirror Magick

What is Mirror Magick?

Mirror magick refers to any spell, divination, or spiritual practice that involves the use of mirrors. This form of magick is accessible, as most people have a mirror at home. There is no requirement for a special or ornate mirror; even a simple compact mirror can be used effectively.

There are many ways to use mirrors in magickal practice, and several methods are suitable for those who are new to the subject. One of the most common is scrying, which is a form of divination performed by gazing at a reflective surface. This surface could be glass, water, a flame, or even the night sky. The term “to scry” means “to discern dimly,” which describes the subtle nature of this practice.

Beginners may wish to explore scrying through various methods and devices. One popular approach is black mirror scrying.

A black mirror is a tool used in divination and spirit communication, with historical roots in ancient Greece. Black mirror scrying is often performed in a space called a psychomanteum, which is a darkened room with a chair facing a black mirror angled to reflect only darkness.

In a psychomanteum, individuals—including those new to the practice—may attempt to communicate with spirit guides, ancestors, or other entities. For example, in group sessions led by occultist Rosemary Ellen Guiley, participants have reported hearing unexplained whispers and drumbeats.

It is not necessary to have a dedicated room or a specialized black mirror to try this practice. Black mirrors are available for purchase, but it is also possible to create one by painting a regular mirror black or by using a reflective black crystal such as obsidian.

To perform black mirror scrying, begin by cleansing the mirror and the surrounding area to remove any residual energies. In a dimly lit room, position the mirror so that it reflects only a blank wall or ceiling, ensuring that nothing is visible in the reflection.

After positioning the mirror, focus your attention within its frame and attempt to enter a meditative state. Incense, candles, soft music, or white noise at a frequency of 432 Hz may assist in achieving this state.

Before starting the session, it is helpful to set a clear intention. Some individuals use scrying to communicate with ancestors, while others seek visions of the past or future. Maintaining a specific intention can support focus during the practice.

Depending on individual sensitivity, messages may be received as images within the mirror, as sounds, or as impressions in the mind.

Mirrors are also used in protection and binding practices.

For example, a mirror reversal spell is a common technique.

Placing a mirror on the outside of each window, facing outward, is believed to reflect negative energy or magickal attacks away from the home. Additionally, placing the image of a person who has caused harm against a mirror facing inward is thought to reflect their energy back to them.

Some traditions consider mirrors to be portals to other worlds. In certain superstitions, mirrors are covered to prevent spirits or entities from entering a home. It is also commonly advised not to place two mirrors facing each other, as this is believed to create an endless chain of portals.

Mirrors can also be used for manifestation. Speaking intentions aloud while looking into a mirror may help reinforce those intentions. This practice is often used for affirmations related to self-worth and self-love.

In love magick, speaking affirmations into a mirror is thought to enhance self-confidence. Folklore suggests that sleeping with a mirror under the pillow for three nights may reveal one’s true love in a dream. Another tale describes walking backward down stairs while looking into a mirror to see a future spouse, though this is not recommended for safety reasons.

Mirrors may also be incorporated into daily routines for glamour magick. For example, using a mirror during personal grooming can be transformed into a ritual to promote confidence or other desired qualities. In this context, the mirror serves as a focal point for intention and self-empowerment.
